I picked up Mary Jane mostly because it kept popping up on TikTok. I didn’t know much beyond what the back cover promised, and honestly, I wasn’t looking for anything heavy. I wanted something easy — a palate cleanser between more serious reads.
That’s exactly what I got… and also not quite.
At first glance, Mary Jane feels like a “cute” book. It is an easy read, and it’s absolutely approachable. But what surprised me was how much it managed to touch on serious topics without ever feeling overwhelming or preachy.
The book deals with addiction and complicated family dynamics, but it does so in a way that feels very human and very relatable. Even when some of the characters are famous, the story never feels untouchable or dramatic for the sake of drama. Instead, it quietly shows how messy real life can be — especially when you’re young and trying to be exactly who your family expects you to be.
What I connected with most was Mary Jane herself. Her dilemma of trying to fit a perfect mold while essentially living a small, mundane double life felt painfully familiar. Not in a big, explosive way — but in that subtle, everyday pressure of wanting to be “good,” responsible, and acceptable, even when it doesn’t quite line up with who you are becoming.
This isn’t a book that asks you to think deeply or unravel complex symbolism. And honestly? That’s part of why it worked for me. It was the kind of book that gently pulled me out of a reading slump — engaging enough to care, light enough to enjoy without effort.
I’d recommend Mary Jane if you’re looking for a break between heavier books, or if you want something comforting that still has emotional substance. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best reads aren’t the most intense — they’re the ones that meet you exactly where you are.
