🧠My Reading Experience (Honest Review)
I went into this a little differently than most people probably would. I like reading series in chronological order based on when events happen, not when books were published. Because of that, I started with First Bones, the novella inside this collection that acts as the true beginning of Temperance Brennan’s story.
So this review is based only on that first novella, not the entire collection.
What I Expected
I’m a huge fan of the Bones TV show—and when I say huge, I mean it’s one of my comfort shows that I’ve rewatched more times than I can count. Because of that, I expected something that felt familiar, but I honestly didn’t know how closely the books would match the tone or character portrayal.
I also wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the forensic-heavy writing style, since I haven’t really read crime fiction like this before.
What I Actually Experienced
What surprised me most was how natural the transition felt from show to book—at least in terms of Brennan herself.
Her personality came through in a way that felt recognizable, but not identical. It wasn’t like reading the TV version—it felt more grounded, a little less polished, and more rooted in her internal thinking. That actually made it more interesting.
Because it’s a novella, the pacing is quick and focused, but not rushed. It doesn’t try to overcomplicate things—it’s very much about:
- How Brennan got pulled into this line of work
- The kind of cases she encounters early on
- The tone of the world she’s stepping into
It felt like a starting point, not a full, layered story—and I think that’s exactly what it’s meant to be.
How It Felt to Read
Honestly, it felt comforting in a familiar way, even though the format and tone are different from the show.
There’s something about:
- The investigative process
- The clinical detail
- The quiet intensity of the case
…that made it easy to settle into, even as someone new to this genre.
At the same time, because it’s shorter, I did feel like I’ll need to reread it to fully absorb everything. It’s not complicated—it just moves quickly, and I wasn’t fully used to the style yet.
Who This Is For (and Who It’s Not)
This will likely work for you if:
- You love the Bones TV show and want more context for Brennan
- You’re curious about crime/forensic fiction but don’t want to commit to a full novel yet
- You like shorter, contained stories that still feel purposeful
This might not be for you if:
- You want a fully developed, complex plot with multiple layers
- You prefer slower, more detailed storytelling
- You don’t enjoy clinical or forensic-focused writing styles
Final Thoughts
This felt like a gentle entry point into a series I already care about.
It didn’t blow me away, but it didn’t need to—it did exactly what I wanted it to do:
- Introduce me to the book version of a character I already love
- Ease me into a new genre
- Make me want to keep going
And that last part matters the most.
If you’re a Bones fan, I’d definitely recommend starting here—even if, like me, you choose to read it out of publication order.
