When I picked up Don’t Look for Me by Wendy Walker, I went in with almost no expectations. I’d seen people mention it on TikTok, mostly saying they liked it, and that was honestly enough for me to give it a try. I wasn’t expecting a standout thriller — just something solid to read.
What I got ended up being better than I thought it would be… but not in the way I expected.
What I Expected Going In
Because I had no real expectations, I assumed this would be a fairly standard thriller — something engaging but probably forgettable. At the time, I had also just read several thrillers back-to-back, and when that happens, I can start to feel a little “done” with the genre. I was already half-expecting to feel underwhelmed.
For a large portion of the book, that expectation seemed accurate. The pacing felt slow at points, and I found myself thinking this would probably land around a 3-star read for me.
What the Reading Experience Was Actually Like
The story unfolds through multiple perspectives, which I genuinely enjoyed. Trying to piece together what was happening — and figuring out who knew what — kept me mentally engaged even when the pacing dragged a bit.
That said, there were moments where I felt frustrated. Not necessarily with the characters themselves, but with the situations they were stuck in. At times, it felt like the story was circling instead of moving forward, and I had to trust that it would eventually pay off.
And thankfully, it did.
The Ending Changed My Rating
By the time I reached the end, the story came together in a way that genuinely improved the whole experience for me. The twist surprised me — not in a jaw-dropping, “I never saw that coming” way — but enough that it reframed what I’d been reading up to that point.
That final stretch was what pushed this book from a likely 3-star read to a solid 4 stars for me. It didn’t undo the slower pacing earlier on, but it made the journey feel worthwhile.
Final Thoughts: Was It Worth It?
Overall, I enjoyed Don’t Look for Me. It’s not a fast-paced, nonstop thriller, and I don’t think it would work as well if you’re looking for constant shocks. But if you enjoy thrillers that build gradually, use multiple viewpoints, and come together more strongly at the end, this one is worth reading.
I think I might have liked it even more if I hadn’t been deep into a thriller streak already — but even so, I’d still recommend it. It’s a good reminder that sometimes a book doesn’t fully click until the final pages.
