I went into Pretty Girls knowing almost nothing about it. I didn’t read detailed reviews, I didn’t look up trigger warnings, and I didn’t fully understand what kind of “psychological thriller” this was going to be. In hindsight, I wish I had taken five extra minutes to do that homework.
Not because the book is bad — it isn’t — but because it is a lot, and that matters.
What I Expected vs. What I Actually Experienced
Based on the title and general reputation, I expected a dark, tense thriller with emotional depth and some disturbing moments. What I got was something much more graphic and relentless than I anticipated.
I have a pretty strong stomach. I don’t usually shy away from intense content, and I rarely have to put a book down because it’s too much. This one genuinely tested that. More than once, I found myself thinking, okay, surely it can’t get worse than this — and then it did.
The “psychological thriller” label is not an exaggeration here. The book leans heavily into both the psychological and the physical horror, and it does not soften the impact for the reader.
How It Felt to Read
Emotionally, this book is heavy. It’s tense, disturbing, and uncomfortable in a very intentional way. The story itself is compelling, and if you like intense thrillers, you’ll likely find yourself pulled forward despite how hard some sections are to get through.
Pacing-wise, it’s not slow — but it is dense. There’s a feeling of constant escalation, and very little relief once things start unfolding. I didn’t feel bored reading this book, but I also didn’t feel relaxed at any point. It’s the kind of read where you finish a chapter and just sit there for a minute before continuing.
By the end, I felt wrung out. Not disappointed — just emotionally done.
Who This Book Is For
You will likely enjoy Pretty Girls if you:
- Like very intense psychological thrillers
- Can handle explicit violence and graphic descriptions
- Appreciate dark, disturbing stories that don’t pull punches
- Want a thriller that leaves a strong emotional impact
Who This Book Is Not For
This is probably not the book for you if you:
- Are sensitive to gore or graphic violence
- Prefer implied horror rather than explicit detail
- Avoid heavy trigger content
- Want a “lighter” thriller or something you can breeze through before bed
Even if you think you can handle anything, I still recommend reading the trigger warnings ahead of time. I didn’t, and I wish I had — not because I wouldn’t have read it, but because I would have been better prepared.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Pretty Girls is a good book — well-written, intense, and memorable — but it is not an easy read. I’ve recommended it to my cousins, and they all ended up enjoying it, with the same caveat: know what you’re walking into.
This is one of those books where the quality is there, but your personal tolerance for graphic content will completely determine your experience. If you like thrillers that truly push boundaries, this one will stick with you. Just don’t go in blind like I did.
